South Malda College, affiliated under the UGC and to the University of Gour Banga (UGB),has an illustrious tradition which contributes to its own culture. It was established in 1995 under the visionary leadership of eminent social worker, Ex-Union Minister and Ex-Member of the Parliament Late A. B. A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury to impart knowledge based on higher education to the people of this area, a large section of which is economically backward and denied of social justice. The college was inaugurated by the then -Prime Minister of India Late P. V. Narashima Rao on the auspicious day of September 16th, 1995. Since then SMC is serving for the cause of education Upliftment not only to the students coming from different parts of Malda but also to a large number of student from southern part of the state as well.
