Frequently Asked Questions
What is JoSAA Counselling?
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the centralized counselling process for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks. It is conducted by the Ministry of Education to ensure transparent and merit-based admission across 127+ premier engineering institutes.
Who is eligible for JoSAA 2026 Counselling?
Candidates who qualify JEE Main 2026 are eligible for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Candidates who qualify JEE Advanced 2026 are eligible for IITs. All candidates must score minimum 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or be in top 20 percentile of their board.
Is there any fee for JoSAA registration?
No, JoSAA registration and choice filling are completely free. Candidates only pay Seat Acceptance Fee (Rs. 35,000 for General/OBC/EWS, Rs. 15,000 for SC/ST/PwD) after seat allotment.
How many rounds are there in JoSAA counselling?
JoSAA conducts 6 rounds of seat allotment. After Round 6, any vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs are filled through CSAB Special Rounds.
What is the difference between Freeze, Float, and Slide?
Freeze means accepting the allotted seat and exiting from further rounds. Float means accepting the seat but remaining open to upgradation in any institute. Slide means accepting the seat but remaining open to better branch in the same institute. Quora users suggest using Float till Round 5 and Freeze/Slide in later rounds.
How many choices should I fill in JoSAA?
Experts recommend filling at least 100+ choices to maximize admission chances. Include safe, moderate, and ambitious options. Even top-ranked candidates should fill multiple choices to account for reserved category seats. Reddit users suggest preparing a "dream list" and "safe list" separately.
Can I change my choices after locking?
No, once choices are locked, they cannot be changed. However, if you don't lock manually, the system auto-locks last saved choices at the deadline. Candidates can only modify preference order (not add/delete) after first round allotment.
What happens if I don't pay Seat Acceptance Fee?
Non-payment of Seat Acceptance Fee within the deadline leads to automatic seat cancellation. The candidate becomes ineligible for all subsequent JoSAA rounds.
Can I participate in JoSAA if I didn't qualify JEE Advanced?
Yes, candidates with valid JEE Main 2026 rank can participate in JoSAA for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JEE Advanced qualification is required only for IIT admission.
What is Partial Admission Fee (PAF)?
PAF is an additional fee (Rs. 40,000 for General/OBC/EWS, Rs. 19,000 for SC/ST/PwD) that candidates allotted seats in NIT+ system must pay after final round to confirm willingness to retain the seat. Non-payment leads to seat cancellation.
What is the difference between JoSAA and CSAB?
JoSAA conducts 6 rounds of counselling for all participating institutes. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) conducts special rounds after JoSAA to fill vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. CSAB also conducts NEUT rounds for North-Eastern states and Union Territories.
Can I withdraw from JoSAA after seat allotment?
Withdrawal is allowed for NIT+ system until the specified deadline with partial refund. For IITs, withdrawal is not allowed after Round 6 seat acceptance. Check official JoSAA website for specific withdrawal rules and refund policies.
