Established on September 1, 1954, it holds the distinction of being the first college founded in Guwahati after India's independence, building a rich legacy over seven decades. As a premier government-affiliated institution permanently affiliated with Gauhati University, it offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The college encompasses 27 departments, including seven postgraduate programs, covering diverse streams such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Administration, Computer Applications, and Tourism Management, with numerous specializations available. Pragjyotish College has earned accreditation from NAAC, most recently receiving an 'A' grade with a CGPA of 3.01 in April 2025, reflecting its commitment to quality education. It is also recognized by the UGC.
