Regional Medical Research Centre, Port Blair is widely recognized for its significant contributions to biomedical research focusing on the health challenges unique to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Established in 1983 as a regional centre of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the institute's mandate includes conducting research on communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in the islands, with a special emphasis on the health issues affecting the indigenous tribes. Located in Dollygunj, Port Blair, the centre houses various research divisions dedicated to areas such as Leptospirosis, Virology, Diarrhoeal Diseases, Entomology, and Epidemiology, supported by advanced laboratories including BSL3 and genomic sequencing facilities. The centre is also recognized internationally as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Diagnosis, Research, Reference and Training in Leptospirosis and has engaged in collaborations with international universities for research projects. While primarily a research institution, it is affiliated with Pondicherry University, Puducherry, offering doctoral programs in Microbiology and Entomology. The institute plays a crucial role in local technical manpower development and contributes significantly to public health initiatives and disease control efforts in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
