Founded in 2001 with the name of Karaikal College of Education, at Jawahar Bal Bhavan in CEO campus and later shifted to the present new building with the new name Perunthalaivar Kamarajar College of Education, it is now better called as PKCE. This government college is well located at the end of First Cross, Nehru Nagar, Karaikal, just behind Pondicherry University - Karaikal campus. Two year Degree and Diploma in teacher education courses are offered here. Only students belonging to Puducherry UT are eligible to apply. It's the only Puducherry Government institution with "A" Grade in NAAC assessment. The college has the potential of becoming a premium research institute in the field of education in Puducherry which is so far eluding. Being the lone government education college in the UT, the government has not taken any initiative for further development such as introducing M.Ed., integrated B.Ed, research in education etc. citing financial lackness. Even the staff of this college are not paid on time and they don't get their 7th pay arrears and promotions. The nearby Deputy Directorate of Immunisation has opted this college as the centre for COVID vaccination during the pandemic. With all the basic facilities such as bed, wheel chair, etc., the centre has so far vaccinated thousands of people both the doses. Still it functions here and it has become the spacious and centralised centre for the people of Nehru Nagar and surrounding areas. Now people above the age of 15 years are also getting vaccination here. No COVID Vaccine Here Now! At present the vaccination centre is shifted to DD Immunization Office, Nehru Nagar. It is just located opposite to the College. This college is no more a vaccination centre. Update: 31.07.2022 Today the District Administration has inaugurated "free coaching for bank exams" in this college. Classes are underway in every week end morning from 7 to 10. Update: 15.11.2022 The district administration is conducting free coaching classes for UDC exam in this college from 6pm to 8pm on weekdays and 10am to 1pm on weekends.
