Frequently Asked Questions

What are the basic eligibility criteria for PhD admission at CSIR-CCMB Hyderabad?

Applicants need a Master’s degree in any branch of science with at least 55% aggregate marks for General/EWS and 50% for OBC, SC/ST, Third Gender and PwD candidates, and must be Indian citizens. A valid national-level PhD fellowship is compulsory at the time of joining.

Which entrance tests and fellowships are accepted for the CCMB PhD programme?

CCMB shortlists candidates through its own computer-based written test and interview. For admission, candidates must hold a valid fellowship such as CSIR-UGC NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, INSPIRE or equivalent, valid when they join the institute.

How does the PhD selection process at CCMB work from test to final admission?

Eligible applicants submit an online form, then appear for a nationwide CBT or remote-proctored test. Shortlisted candidates with valid fellowships attend two rounds of in-person interviews over two days in Hyderabad; final selection depends on combined performance in test and interviews.

What is the duration and structure of the PhD programme at CCMB Hyderabad?

The PhD programme typically runs for about 5 years. Students work full-time in a research lab under a CCMB scientist, complete coursework as prescribed by the academy they are registered with, and submit a thesis based on original research for the award of the degree.

Does CCMB charge any tuition or laboratory fees for PhD students?

CCMB functions as a CSIR research laboratory rather than a teaching university; PhD students primarily receive fellowship support instead of paying conventional semester tuition. Any nominal registration or university-related fees are paid to the partnering degree-awarding institution, not as high tuition to CCMB.

What kind of fellowship amount do CCMB PhD scholars typically receive?

Students usually draw the standard national JRF/SRF fellowships (for example, CSIR-UGC or DBT), which are in the range of about ₹37,000 per month at the JRF level and ₹42,000 per month at the SRF level, plus House Rent Allowance when applicable, funding agency rules.

Are hostel rooms at CCMB allotted to all PhD students and what facilities do they have?

The on-campus scholar’s hostel Abhigyan has 96 single rooms and 5 dorm units, and all PhD scholars receive single rooms. Each room has an attached bathroom, kitchen and balcony, is furnished with cot, table and cupboard, and the building has Wi-Fi, purified drinking water, washing machines and 24×7 security.

Is family accommodation available for married PhD scholars at CCMB Hyderabad?

Abhigyan hostel is primarily designed as single-occupancy accommodation for PhD scholars. Family housing is limited to staff quarters on campus, so married students who want to stay with spouses or children usually arrange rental accommodation in nearby areas like Habsiguda and Tarnaka.

What kind of research specializations and facilities does CCMB offer for PhD work?

CCMB covers broad areas such as cell biology, molecular genetics, genomics, structural biology, neurobiology, infection biology and conservation biology. Facilities include advanced microscopy and imaging, zebrafish and Drosophila labs, genomics platforms, and access to LaCONES and the Medical Biotechnology Complex for specialized projects.

How is the research workload and lab culture at CCMB for PhD students?

Experiments run 24×7 across the year, and PhD scholars often work extended hours, including late evenings or weekends, depending on experiments. The culture is research-intensive and publication-driven, with close supervision from group leaders and frequent internal seminars and journal clubs.

Does CCMB provide opportunities for internships or short-term training for students from other institutes?

CCMB runs programs such as the Young Innovators Program and “Shadow a Scientist,” typically for two weeks, where selected school and college students can interact with scientists and observe lab work. It also conducts short skill development courses at the Medical Biotechnology Complex.

What kind of placements or career paths do CCMB PhD graduates typically pursue?

As a research institute, CCMB focuses on academic and research careers rather than campus placements. Graduates commonly join postdoctoral positions in leading institutes in India and abroad, enter faculty tracks, or work in biotech and pharma R&D, diagnostics, and life-science start-ups, including those incubated at AIC-CCMB.

How active is the start-up and biotechnology ecosystem around CCMB?

The Medical Biotechnology Complex at Uppal hosts more than 20 life-science start-ups within facilities like the Atal Incubation Centre-CCMB, MeitY Startup Hub and CRTDH. PhD scholars gain exposure to translational research, diagnostics, and product development through collaborations and seminars with these companies.

What campus-life facilities are available for CCMB students beyond the laboratories?

The Habsiguda main campus includes student hostel, guest house, canteen, gym, library, central courtyard and sports spaces. The campus is enclosed and green, with round-the-clock security; students typically socialize in the hostel common room, canteen and central court after lab hours.

How is the food and mess facility for students staying on the CCMB campus?

PhD scholars usually eat at the campus canteen and hostel mess, which serve regular vegetarian and non-vegetarian options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The on-campus guest house kitchen also provides meals and can arrange special food during conferences or visits, adding some variety to daily options.

What is the surrounding area of CCMB like in terms of commute and daily needs?

The main campus is in Habsiguda, connected by Hyderabad Metro (blue line) and city buses, with Tarnaka and Uppal nearby. Supermarkets, eateries, hostels and PGs are within a few kilometres, making it feasible for off-campus students and visitors to manage daily needs without long commutes.

Is there any formal dress code or specific lab attire required for CCMB students?

There is no institute-wide formal dress code, but standard laboratory safety norms apply. Students wear covered shoes, long trousers and lab coats when handling chemicals or biological samples, and use gloves, masks and eye protection in relevant labs as specified by their group and biosafety rules.

How does CCMB compare with IISERs and top biology departments for someone focused purely on research?

CCMB operates as a dedicated CSIR research lab with no undergraduate teaching load, so PhD scholars work in an environment fully centered on research with extensive shared facilities. Students seeking intensive lab exposure and high-end instrumentation often prefer CCMB over conventional university departments with heavier teaching obligations.

What is the role of LaCONES within CCMB and can PhD students work there?

LaCONES, an annexe of CCMB, focuses on conservation of endangered species using reproductive and molecular technologies. PhD candidates can opt in their application to work at LaCONES or “LaCONES only,” and selected students pursue theses on wildlife forensics, assisted reproduction and conservation genomics.

Does CCMB provide a guest house for visiting students or parents, and what facilities does it have?

The on-campus guest house has 2 VIP suites and 28 double-bedded air-conditioned rooms, open 24×7 throughout the year. It offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, can arrange special meals and VIP services on request, and mainly serves CSIR staff, visiting scientists and official guests.
