प्राचीन भारत में विद्यालय गुरुकुल के रूप में होते थें। ये अक्सर गुरु के घर या किसी मठ में होते थें। मुग़लों के ज़माने में, बच्चों को शिक्षित करने के लिये 'मदरसों' का आरम्भ किया गया था। अंग्रेज़ी दस्तावेज़ों के अनुसार, १८वीं सदी में देश में विद्यालय सामान्य थें। पूरे देश में मंदिर, मस्जिद और गांव में एक विद्यालय का होना सामान्य था। इनमें पढ़ना, लिखना, धर्मशास्त्र, क़ानून, खगोल/एस्ट्रोनॉमी, आचार-विचार, जीव, चिकित्सा विज्ञान और धर्म के बारे में सिखाया जाता था। ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य में इंग्लैंङ, अमरीका और भिन्न देशों से क्रिश्चियन मिशनरियों ने, मिशनरी और आवासीय विद्यालय खोले थें। जैसे ये प्रसिद्ध हुए, तो कुछ विद्यालय खोले गए, और कुछ विद्यालयों को सम्मान भी मिला। आज ज़्दायातर विद्यालयों में पढ़ाई-लिखाई के दौरान अनुशासन और पट्यक्रमों में अंग्रेज़ी नियमों का पालन किया जाता है। आज भारत में कई शिक्षा बोर्ङ/मंङल हैं। उदाहरण स्वरूप: केंद्रीय माध्यमिक शिक्षा बोर्ड, सी.आइ.सी.एस.सी व अन्य स्टेट/राज्य के बोर्ङ आदि। आजकल सामान्य रूप से भाषा, गणित, विज्ञान, भौतिकी/फिज़िक्स, रसायनी/केमिस्ट्री, जीव विज्ञान, भूगोल/जियोग्राफी, इतिहास, सामान्य ज्ञान, कंप्यूटर विज्ञान सिखाए जाते हैं। इसके अलावा स्कूलों में खेल कूद, गाना, चित्रकारी व नाटक भी होते हैं।
