In the name of Lord Jesus, the people of Sawyerpuram have decided to establish an College of Education in the 'Pope Memorial Higher Secondary School, Sawyerpuram' land purchased through the sale deed executed by the Old Boys Association of Pope Memorial Higher Secondary School, Sawyerpuram. The land is just behind Pope Memorial Higher Secondary School, Sawyerpuram. Dr.G.U.Pope College of Education, Sawyerpuram is named after the great servant of God Dr. George Uglow Pope who’s also known as Tamil Scholar. The College was established in the year 2005 by the C.S.I.Thoothukudi-Nazareth Diocese which is one of the pioneering organizations running many educational institutions. "The motto of our college is “Be the first, Be with the first” and its aim is to produce teachers of good quality and high standard who will pave the way for the prosperity of India. " Dr.G.U.Pope College of Education is the answer to the avid desire of the well-wishers of Sawyerpuram, that methodological education be available in its locality. The college instigated helping the society of Sawyerpuram, during the academic year 2006-2007. It runs under the support of the CSI Thoothukudi-Nazareth Diocese- established by earnest and committed missionaries, dedicated to provide quality and disciplined education to the distant region. The college is located in a peaceful location along with natural beauty on the Thoothukudi-Sawyerpuram 'Main Road'. The College is approved by the National Council of Teacher Education, Southern Regional Committee, Bangalore andis affiliated to Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, Chennai.
