Govt.Arts & Sports College, Jalandhar is an unparalleled & singularly remarkable institution, which has a splendid past, evolving present and a potentially glorious future. The institution has a unique distinction of combinig the academic & sporting traditions to produce young men & women of rare qualities. The college was founded in 1961 as State College of Sports at the initiative of S.Pratap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab. The objective in setting up this institution was to produce sportsmen who would fly high the Indian tri-colour at the World Olympics and International sports meets and also of giving them regular university education so as to enable them to find respectable placements in society. It was the only college of its kind in the whole of Asia. The sports persons who were admitted were given free boarding, lodging and education with excellent coaching facilities in various sports. On the academic side they studied arts as well as science subjects from B.A./B.Sc.degree. This system continued till 1977. Admission to science subjects was then discontinued and system of admitting day scholars was introduced along with 140 sports scholars who continued to be given all previous facilities. Due to the change in academic curriculum, the name of the college was changed to Govt.Arts & Sports College, Jalandhar. This institution has produced at least 100 players of national and international repute which includes 5 Arjuna Awardees. Some of the prominent and well known sports personalities are:Mr.Sajjan Singh Cheema,Arjuna Awardee; Mr. Anil Kumar Punj, Arjuna Awardee;Col. Balbir Singh, Olympian& Arjuna Awardee;Late Surjit Singh Olympian, former captain Indian Hockey Team and Arjuna Awardee;Col. Harcharan Singh, Olympian and Arjuna Awardee; Mr. L.S Manda, international athlete; Mr.Jugraj Singh, international athlete; Mr. Sukhwant Singh, international volley ball player. In June 2002, with the support and selfless effort of Chaudhary Santokh Singh, the then Minister of Medical Education & Research and Mr.Khushal Behl, the then Education Minister, this college was converted into a general co-education college to cater to the needs of all the economically weaker, and other general students of the city and surrounding areas. This was done to help young girls to have access to quality higher education at affordable terms, as this is the only Govt. College in the city. Presently, the institution is looking forward to add a girls’ sports wing in the college. Intense efforts are being made to develop and expand the academic & infrastructural scope of the institution. With the tremendous efforts of our worthy principal Mrs. Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary and the incredibly generous help of our dynamic Director of public instructions, Dr. Kanwarjeet Singh, an IT Department has been added in the college in which Bachelor of Computer Application and PGDCA courses are being successfully run . To this effect a new and spacious computer lab with the latest equipments and Edu-Sat has been set up in the college. Department of Music was added to the college from the current session. Arts stream subjects such as English, Economics, Public Administration, Functional English, Geography, Elective Hindi, History, Punjabi and Physical Education are being offered to the students. These courses have facilitated our students to be prepared to face the challenges and need of modern times. Recently, Somnath Memorial Seminar Hall has been developed dedicated to the first principal of this college and visionary Sri Somnath ji.
