NIFT Hyd (National Institute of Fashion Technology, Hyderabad) was designed by Architect Sanjay Mohe in 2001 Sanjay Mohe graduated from Sir J.J. School of Architecture in 1976 and worked under Charles Correa before starting his own practice. Mindspace Architects being formed in 2004, NIFT Hyderabad is one his early designs which was soley designed by him in 2001. His philosophy in design is an attempt to use 'light' as a building material, respecting the 5 senes and 5 elements of nature. His design ideologies like to design inside out rather than outside in, responding to climate, integrating nature into the building and eco-friendly designs are quite evident in all his buildings. Only the block in the center of the site was designed by him, other blocks were added on by other firms in the years that were to follow. It's a challenge capturing the beautiful form of NIFT in photographs as it is covered with trees all around. The slipt levels, light Wells, circulation pattern and the sculpted voids are the highlights of this building. One must also definitely observe the following when visiting NIFT 1. The structure of the building was designed in such a way that all the surface water from the building and proximity of the land around the block culminated at the front (refer photo 1,9) 2. The peripheral walls were given niches and skylights above to use them as showcasing space for the mannequins (refer photo 5,6,7) 3.There is no single staircase which connects all the floors, the site being contoured, as you walk around the outer corridor, you will climb a sequence of levels connecting all 4 floors with the use of slipt levels. This becomes magical experience with the incorporation of voids, dual corridors and light Wells through out
