It's one of the best science research institute of India. It has a great historical value. Nobel laureate like CV Raman had been associated with this institute and discovered the Raman Effect here. Many more stalwart scientists like Meghnad Saha, S Bhagavantam, C Prasad, N K Sethi, L Srivastava had enriched the research culture. It was founded by Dr. Mahendralal Sircar, a renowned doctor of his time, on 29th July, 1976. Stalwarts like Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, Keshab Chandra Sen were among the members of the first trustee board. Many more stalwarts like Gurudas Banerjee, Surendranath Banerjee, Dr. Nilratan Sircar, Jnan Chandra Ghosh. In the early phase, the list of lecturers in Science in the institute included all the luminaries of the era: Father Lafont, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Asutosh Mukherjee, Chunilal Bose and Pramathanath Bose.Till the early decades of this century the Association was the only place in India where higher research in Physical Sciences could be carried out. As a result, students from all over India began assembling at Calcutta to work in the creative atmosphere of the Association.
