The JEE Main is among the most significant engineering examination tests in India. The question many students ask themselves is how many times they can take this exam. As of now, the student is allowed to take the JEE Main six times altogether. These six attempts are divided into three years running.

It implies that a student who passes a Class 12 board exam in 2025 can get four JEE Main extra attempts (other than 2025 attempts) i.e. twice in 2026 and twice in 2027. Whilst they are unable to take the exam after these three years and six attempts.

By knowing that, the students can better plan their studies and have a clear schedule on how they are going to prepare.

What is Meant by JEE Main Extra Attempts?

Students are normally confused by the term JEE Main extra attempts. It means that the JEE Main exam is conducted twice per year. Previously students were only given one opportunity in a year to take the exam. This is because now in January and April there are exams, and so students have two opportunities a year. These two opportunities are referred to as additional opportunities as compared to the previous system.

The advantage of this system is that the students can enhance their performance in a period of one year without having to wait an entire year. Note, however, that such additional attempts are included in the limit of six attempts in three years.

At the moment the JEE Main exam has no upper age limit. This implies that any student at any age can take the exam. But students need to utilize their efforts within three years of passing Class 12. The issue of age does not matter provided students comply with this rule. This provides most students (including those who have gap, or repeated a course) with a fair opportunity to be noticed.

  • Every time JEE Main is taken (January and April), it is considered to be an individual attempt.
  • When you show up in the same year in both sessions, they both count as attempts.
  • Your highest score among all the attempts will be counted to be admitted and eligible to take further exams, such as JEE Advanced.

This implies that it is desirable to play in both sessions in order to get a better rank, though you have to remember the number of attempts that you have in order not to exceed six.

Recent Changes in Rules

A policy of six tries over three years is not new. It gives students not too many chances and not too many attempts to write the exams, which drag to no end.

Nevertheless, it is always advisable that students follow official updates as rules in examinations can alter depending on the decision of the government or examination authorities.

Who is Eligible for JEE Main Extra Attempts?

In order to claim the extra attempts in JEE Main you need to be:

  • You are taking your Class 12 board exams, or Have successfully completed Class 12 in the past 2 years.
  • Unless you have passed your 12th board within three years before, you cannot appear in JEE Main.

JEE Main Extra Attempts for Droppers

Learners that drop after passing the Class 12 are referred to as droppers. Such students are still allowed to take their six attempts within three years of passing Class 12. The droppers also receive an equal opportunity to be seen in the two sessions of the year and score better.

Advantages of JEE Main Extra Attempts

Numerous advantages of the multi trial and additional opportunities exist. Some of them are:

  • It takes the pressure off since students are aware that they get two tries per year.
  • It enhances the possibility of getting a higher score with practice.
  • Students have the opportunity to correct previous errors and to learn.
  • It does not require a person to spend an entire year should they wish to rewrite the exam.

Faqs

In 3 years starting with your Class 12 pass year, you are allowed to take the JEE Main exam 6 times in total. This implies that you will have two opportunities to do better each year.
