Came into existence in 1960s.Earlier it was part of University of Kashmir.Originally started in a campus on the other side of tawi river (which divides Jammu into two parts). Later on shifted into its present location which is very beautiful, green and clean. Old campus now has only one boys hostel and few staff accomodations and some part given to IIM Jammu.Over 30 departments are running mainly PG programmes. It has some campuses in the nearby geographical localities such as Kathua and Ramnagar.Kathua campus holds its engineering institute.Law, management, CS, sciences, arts and Humanity, education, physical sports etc are the main facultiesAround 4-5 boys and girls hostel available in the campus

The University of Jammu, is one of top University of India. It accredited as 'A+' grade University by National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India, came into existence in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir (established in 1948).The University of Jammu has recently been awarded 51 st rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has also been granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission for maintaining high academic standards and in terms of the graded autonomy, the University of Jammu has been recognized category-I university.Apart from its main new campus at Bahu Wali Rakh, old campus and Poonch House in Jammu, the University has eleven other campuses.

The University of Jammu informally known as Jammu University (JU), accredited as A+ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), was established in 1969.University is located near banks of the Tawi River. The university has set up seven off-sites campuses at Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Poonch, Reasi, Ramnagar, Kathuaand Udhampur. The university is the first university in India to receive the ISO-9001 certification.The Main Campus of Jammu University is situated at Baha Saheb Ambedkar Road in Jammu at an altitude of 1030 ft above sea level. The Main Campus of University houses the Teaching Departments, Health Centre, Guest House, Post Office, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Bookshop, Hostels, Cafeteria and Canteens and many other facilities. The second campus of the University (the old campus) is spread over 10.5 acres which is located at a distance of 4 km from the main campus currently has residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching employees and hostel for boys.
