Aibe September - November Eligibility Criteria — Age, Qualification, Attempts & Reservation

Candidates seeking to appear for the AIBE All India Bar Examination 2025 must hold a 3-year or 5-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a university recognized by the Bar Council of India. Final-year students in their final semester of a 3-year or 5-year LLB degree course are also eligible to register, provided they have no backlogs from previous semesters. While there are no minimum marks specified for the LLB degree itself to appear for the examination, candidates must achieve certain qualifying marks in the AIBE exam to be awarded the Certificate of Practice. Although earlier mandates required enrollment with a State Bar Council to appear for the exam, recent guidelines indicate that candidates without an enrollment certificate, or those who have surrendered their enrollment, are now eligible to take the AIBE. However, obtaining a Certificate of Practice after clearing the AIBE necessitates enrollment with the State Bar Council. Furthermore, candidates provisionally enrolled with a State Bar Council are required to qualify the AIBE exam within two years of their provisional enrollment. Failure to do so may necessitate re-enrollment or an extension from their State Bar Council.

Academic Eligibility For Aibe

Candidates applying for All India Bar Examination must have:
  • An LLB Degree (either 3-year or 5-year integrated law degree) from a Bar Council of India (BCI) recognized institution.
  • No specific minimum percentage in LLB required; candidates must have successfully passed their LLB degree.
  • Required subjects: Not applicable, as eligibility is based on a valid LLB degree, which can be pursued by candidates from any academic stream (Arts, Commerce, Science, etc.).

Age Limit And Relaxation

For the AIBE All India Bar Examination 2025, there is no prescribed lower or upper age limit. This means that law graduates of any age who fulfill the other eligibility criteria are eligible to apply and appear for the examination. The Bar Council of India, the conducting body, has not set any age restrictions for candidates wishing to take the AIBE. Consequently, there are no specific age relaxations provided for categories such as SC, ST, OBC-NCL, or Persons with Disabilities (PwD), as the age criterion is universally open.

Aibe Category Wise Criteria

The AIBE All India Bar Examination 2025 incorporates category-based relaxations primarily concerning the minimum qualifying marks required to pass the examination and obtain the Certificate of Practice. For candidates belonging to the General and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories, a minimum of 45% marks from the total scores of the AIBE exam is required. However, candidates from the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories are provided a relaxation, needing to obtain at least 40% marks to qualify. To avail these benefits, candidates must possess and submit valid and up-to-date category certificates during the online registration process. For PwD candidates, additional benefits, such as extra time during the examination, may be provided, contingent on producing a disability certificate issued by a competent medical authority indicating 50% or more disability in specified categories. The verification of these documents follows the official protocol established by the Bar Council of India to ensure legitimate claims to category-based relaxations.

Nationality, Domicile, And Foreign Applicants

The AIBE All India Bar Examination 2025 is primarily accessible to Indian citizens. Additionally, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders are also eligible to apply, provided they hold an LLB degree from a recognized Indian university and are or will be enrolled with a State Bar Council for the purpose of obtaining a Certificate of Practice. As the AIBE is a national-level examination designed to qualify advocates for practice across India, there are no specific domicile requirements for state-level eligibility. For Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and other foreign applicants, their eligibility to practice law in India and appear for the AIBE generally necessitates compliance with specific Bar Council of India regulations and potentially individual college or university guidelines if they pursued their law degree outside India. It is advisable for such candidates to verify their status directly with the Bar Council of India or relevant authorities.

Nationality Requirements

  • Indian citizens who are enrolled as an advocate with a State Bar Council.

Number Of Attempts

Before preparing for the AIBE All India Bar Examination 2025, it is essential to know if there is a cap on the number of attempts. The Bar Council of India permits unlimited attempts for the AIBE. This means candidates can appear for the examination as many times as necessary until they successfully clear it and obtain the Certificate of Practice. There are no restrictions on how many times a candidate can take the AIBE, unlike some other competitive examinations that impose a maximum number of tries. However, it is a noteworthy regulation that candidates provisionally enrolled with a State Bar Council are expected to qualify the AIBE within two years of their provisional enrollment. If a candidate is unable to pass the examination within this two-year period, they may be required to re-enroll or seek an extension for their provisional enrollment from their respective State Bar Council.

Attempt Restrictions

No specific restrictions on the number of attempts; candidates can re-appear until they pass.
