The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), Kozhikode, ranks among India's premier postgraduate training centers in mental health. Established by the Government of Kerala in 1982 and fully operational since 1984-85, IMHANS is an autonomous institution affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). It has been chosen by the Government of India to develop into a center of excellence in mental health. The institute relocated to its dedicated campus within the Government Medical College campus in Kozhikode in 2014-2015, operating in close collaboration with the medical college. IMHANS offers specialized postgraduate programs unique in the government sector in Kerala. These include a two-year full-time M.Phil in Clinical Psychology and an M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work, each with an intake of 8 students per year. A one-year Post Basic Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing is also offered, accommodating 10 students annually. The M.Phil in Clinical Psychology is recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), and the Post Basic Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing by the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council. IMHANS is also a recognized PhD research center. The academic environment at IMHANS is supported by five key departments. Admissions for M.Phil programs are competitive, based on an entrance examination (75% weightage) and a personal interview (25% weightage), with applications processed through the LBS Centre for Science and Technology. Successful M.Phil candidates receive a monthly stipend of ₹10,000. The institute is dedicated to comprehensive mental health care, fostering community programs, and conducting vital research, ensuring its position at the forefront of mental health education and service in the region.
