JEE Main Result 2026: Score Calculation

The JEE Main 2026 Score Calculation follows the official process defined by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts (and sometimes multiple sessions) with varying difficulty levels, NTA does not use raw marks for ranking or final results. Instead, it calculates NTA Scores as percentiles using a normalization procedure to ensure fairness and equity across all candidates.

Why Normalization is Used

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) and Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning) are held in multiple shifts over several days. Question papers differ slightly, and difficulty may vary. Normalization adjusts for these differences so no candidate is advantaged or disadvantaged due to their assigned shift.

How NTA Percentile Score (NTA Score) is Calculated

The NTA Score is a percentile score, calculated separately for each subject and overall. It indicates the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a particular candidate in that session/shift.

Official Formula for Percentile Score (per NTA Normalization Procedure): Percentile Score of a Candidate = 100 × (Number of candidates appeared from the session with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN the candidate) / Total number of candidates appeared in that session

  • This is computed for:
    • Each subject (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry for Paper 1; Aptitude, Mathematics, Drawing/Planning for Paper 2).
    • Total (aggregate) NTA Score.
  • Percentiles are rounded to the required decimal places as per NTA rules.
  • The highest scorer in each session gets 100 percentile (even if multiple candidates tie at the top).
  • For multi-session aggregation (e.g., best of two sessions for final ranking), the highest NTA Score across sessions is considered for each candidate.

Steps in the Official Process

  1. Raw scores calculated based on marking scheme (+4 correct, -1 incorrect, 0 unattempted).
  2. Raw scores per shift/session used to compute session-wise percentiles using the formula above.
  3. Percentiles compiled across all shifts for overall NTA Scores.
  4. Ranks (CRL and Category) allotted based on NTA Scores.
  5. Scorecard displays NTA percentiles, ranks, and qualifying status for JEE Advanced (top ~2.5 lakh in Paper 1).

JEE Main 2026 Result: Re-Evaluation & Rechecking

There is no provision for re-evaluation, re-checking, or re-totalling of the JEE Main 2026 results or answer sheets once the NTA Scores (percentiles) are declared. The NTA Scores displayed on the scorecard are final and binding. This policy applies to both Session 1 (January 2026) and Session 2 (April 2026) results.

Cancellation of Result / Candidature

NTA may cancel the result or candidature in specific cases (as per Information Bulletin Section 5.5 and related notices):

  • Unfair Means Practices (UMP): Includes cheating, impersonation, use of prohibited items, communication devices, or any breach of examination rules.
  • Multiple attempts in one session or impersonation.
  • Providing false information in the application form (e.g., category, PwD status, etc.).
  • Violation of exam instructions leading to disqualification.

What Candidates Can Do Instead

  • Before results: Challenge provisional answer keys (during the challenge window, e.g., for Session 1 Paper 1 and Paper 2, windows were open in early February 2026; final keys are now out and cannot be challenged further).
  • After results: Download and verify your official scorecard from jeemain.nta.nic.in (or linked portals like examinationservices.nic.in). Report genuine technical/display errors (if any) via NTA helpline/email, but this does not include re-checking of answers or scores.
  • For grievances unrelated to re-evaluation: Contact NTA helpdesk (011-40759000 or jeemain@nta.ac.in) as mentioned on the official site.

JEE Main 2026 Rank List

The JEE Main 2026 All India Rank (AIR) is determined by the National Testing Agency (NTA) based exclusively on the NTA Scores (normalized percentiles), as outlined in the official JEE Main 2026 Information Bulletin. NTA prepares the rank list after considering performances from both sessions (Session 1 and Session 2), ensuring fairness through normalization.

How NTA Decides the All India Rank

  1. Normalization to NTA Scores (Percentiles):
  2. Best Score Consideration:
    • Candidates can appear in Session 1 (January 2026) and/or Session 2 (April 2026).
    • For the final merit list and All India Rank, NTA considers the higher (better) NTA Score (percentile) from the two sessions for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech).
    • For Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning), ranks are based on the respective session(s) attempted.
  3. Preparation of Rank List:
    • The All India Rank (AIR) — also called Common Rank List (CRL) — is allotted based on the descending order of the Total NTA Score (aggregate percentile).
    • Category ranks are prepared separately for reserved categories (GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST).
    • The final rank list (including AIR and category ranks) is released after Session 2 results (expected around April 20, 2026, per the Information Bulletin).
    • Session 1 results (declared February 16, 2026, for Paper 1; February 24, 2026, for Paper 2) show individual NTA Scores and provisional ranks, but the final AIR is from the combined merit list.
  4. Tie-Breaking Rules (Inter-se Merit):
    • If two or more candidates obtain the same Total NTA Score, NTA resolves ties in this order (as per the Information Bulletin):
      1. Higher NTA Score in Mathematics.
      2. Higher NTA Score in Physics.
      3. Higher NTA Score in Chemistry (for Paper 1).
      4. Candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect to correct answers across all subjects.
      5. Candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect to correct answers in Mathematics.
      6. Candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect to correct answers in Physics.
      7. If the tie persists, candidates are awarded the same rank.

JEE Main 2026 Cutoff

The JEE Main 2026 Cutoff refers to the minimum NTA Score (percentile) required to qualify for JEE Advanced 2026 (for admission to IITs) and to be eligible for ranking in JoSAA counselling for NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs. The cutoff is released category-wise by the National Testing Agency (NTA) along with the final results (typically after Session 2).

Session 2 (April 2026) results are expected by around April 20, 2026 (tentative, as per the Information Bulletin).

Q2. Where can I check the official JEE Main 2026 result?

Visit the official NTA website: https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/. Check the "Public Notices" or "Results" section for direct links (e.g., "Results for JEE(Main)-2026 [Session-I] – Paper-I"). Results redirect to secure portals like examinationservices.nic.in for login. Always use official NTA sites only—avoid third-party links.

Q3. What details are shown on the JEE Main 2026 scorecard?

The JEE Main scorecard displays:

  • Candidate name, application number, roll number, DOB, category, gender, state of eligibility.
  • Session and paper details.
  • Subject-wise NTA percentiles (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry).
  • Total NTA Score (aggregate percentile).
  • All India Rank (CRL), category rank, and qualifying status for JEE Advanced. Raw marks are not shown—only normalized percentiles.

Q4. How is the JEE Main 2026 result calculated (percentile vs marks)?

NTA uses percentile scores due to multi-shift normalization. The formula is: Percentile = 100 × (Number of candidates with raw score ≤ yours in the session) / Total candidates in that session. Higher percentile = better rank. The best NTA score (from Session 1 or 2) is considered for final merit. Raw marks are internal only.
