The prestigious Veterinary College, spread across a sprawling 196-acre campus, has a rich legacy dating back to its inauguration by His Highness Maharaja Shri Jaya Chamarajendra Wodeyar, then Governor of Karnataka, on January 6, 1962. Initially affiliated with Mysore University, Mysore, the college transitioned in 1965 to become a constituent institution of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, adopting the trimester system inspired by the land-grant model of education. In 2004, following the establishment of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), the college became an integral part of this esteemed veterinary university. Celebrating its golden jubilee from September 2007 to August 2008, the college reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in education, research, and extension. The institution's primary mission is to provide top-tier veterinary education tailored to address the evolving needs of society, particularly those of livestock farmers. It focuses on developing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the challenges posed by emerging research fields and the dynamic demands of the agricultural and veterinary sectors. The college boasts 19 state-of-the-art departments staffed by highly qualified faculty, offering undergraduate programs in BVSc & AH as per Veterinary Council of India regulations, alongside master's and doctoral programs in 17 and 14 disciplines, respectively. Its advanced facilities include well-equipped veterinary hospitals in Hebbal and Yelahanka, offering comprehensive support for teaching, research, and community service. Additionally, the college operates instructional farms for dairy, sheep, piggery, poultry, and experimental small animals, providing hands-on training to students. With an impressive alumni network, the college has produced over 4,000 veterinary graduates and more than 1,200 postgraduates, many of whom have secured prominent positions in leading institutions such as IISc, CCMB, NIDC, CIFE, NRCs, NDRI, IVRI, and NIANP. Some alumni have also excelled in civil services and other prestigious fields. Students from across India and countries like the USA, Canada, Malaysia, Iran, Iraq, Ghana, Mauritius, Nigeria, Somalia, Uganda, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bahrain have benefited from the college's academic programs, underscoring its global reputation. Significant research contributions from the college include the development of the Giriraja and Swarnadhara poultry breeds by the Department of Poultry Science, which have become symbols of sustainable backyard poultry farming in rural and tribal regions of India and other Asian countries. Additionally, the UAS sheep breed stands as a testament to the college's innovative research. The college actively collaborates with numerous international universities and institutes, offering specialized training in clinical sciences, animal sciences, and wildlife studies. Its graduates and faculty play a crucial role in combating zoonotic diseases such as rabies, tuberculosis, brucellosis, leptospirosis, and tapeworm infections, contributing significantly to public health and veterinary science globally.

I recently visited the government veterinary hospital located on Bellary Road in Bangalore with my Labrador and Indi mix puppy, SIRI, for her first vaccination. My experience was quite positive and reassuring. The hospital itself is well-maintained, clean, and equipped with the necessary medical equipment for various treatments and procedures. The waiting area was spacious and provided a comfortable environment for both pets and their owners. The staff at the hospital were welcoming and displayed a genuine concern for the animals. The veterinarians and the students were professional and knowledgeable, ensuring that Siri felt at ease throughout the process. At first you have to purchase a token of just 50 rupees and you will get the que no of yours . Hospital opens at morning 9:30 till 1 o'clock. The vaccination process was smooth and efficient. The veterinarian took the time to thoroughly examine Siri, addressing any concerns I had regarding her health and development. The doctor explained the vaccination procedure in detail, including the importance of each vaccine and the potential side effects. Their patience and willingness to answer all my questions were greatly appreciated. As a government facility, the hospital offers affordable veterinary care without compromising on quality. This is particularly beneficial for pet owners who may find private veterinary services financially challenging. Additionally, the location on Bellary Road is convenient and easily accessible, with ample parking space available. Overall, my visit to the government veterinary hospital on Bellary Road was highly satisfactory. The combination of a well-equipped facility, compassionate staff, and affordable services makes it a reliable choice for pet owners in Bangalore. I left the hospital feeling confident that Siri received the best possible care for her first vaccination. One thing is that you have to go out side just opposite of the hospital for your medicine and any another necessary equipment needed.

What entrance exam do I need for BVSc at Veterinary College Bangalore?
For Karnataka state quota BVSc & AH seats at Veterinary College, Hebbal (under KVAFSU), admission is through KCET based on 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) with at least 50% aggregate for General category. All India / NRI quota seats are filled through separate KVAFSU merit lists from Class 12 scores.
Is NEET required for Veterinary College Bangalore?
Veterinary College Bangalore (KVAFSU constituent) uses KCET and KVAFSU’s own merit lists for regular BVSc admissions. NEET-UG is relevant mainly for central ICAR quota and some other universities, but the Hebbal college’s primary state intake runs through KCET and university counselling.
What is the BVSc course duration and structure at Veterinary College Bangalore?
The BVSc & AH program runs for 5.5 years: 4.5 years of coursework spread over 9 semesters followed by a compulsory 12‑month rotating internship. The curriculum follows Veterinary Council of India regulations with core subjects like anatomy, pathology, surgery, medicine, and livestock production.
What is the approximate BVSc fee at Veterinary College Bangalore?
Veterinary College Bangalore is a government institute, so BVSc tuition is relatively low. Total college fee for the 5.5‑year BVSc programme is around ₹3.1 lakh, which works out to roughly ₹55,000–₹60,000 per year excluding hostel and mess charges.
How much does the hostel and mess cost per month?
Hostel rooms are non‑AC, twin or triple sharing with basic furniture and Wi‑Fi. Students report subsidised mess charges of about ₹2,000–₹3,200 per month for non‑vegetarian food, paid monthly. This is in addition to a modest annual hostel fee set by the college.
Does Veterinary College Bangalore have management or paid seats for BVSc?
No. Veterinary College Bangalore is a government college under KVAFSU and does not offer management or paid seats. All BVSc seats are filled strictly on merit through KCET, NRI/FN quota lists, or other notified university‑level quotas.
What are the hostel facilities like at Veterinary College Bangalore?
The campus has separate boys’ (Kamadhenu) and girls’ (Kalpavruksha) hostels with non‑AC rooms, common rooms, TV rooms, Wi‑Fi, hot water, gym and adequate parking. Girls’ hostel has CCTV, 24×7 security, solar hot water, RO drinking water and indoor games, with separate veg and non‑veg messes.
Is hostel compulsory for first-year BVSc students?
Hostel is not officially compulsory; many first‑years choose hostel due to early‑morning practicals and clinics, but local Bangalore students often commute from home. Room allotment is prioritized for outstation, NRI and female students subject to availability of seats.
What is the academic pattern – semester or annual exams – in BVSc here?
The college follows the VCI‑prescribed pattern with year‑wise or semester‑wise theory and practical examinations. Students report three internal tests each year followed by a comprehensive annual or end‑semester exam, with a minimum 50% required in theory and practical to pass.
How qualified is the faculty at Veterinary College Bangalore?
Most departments are headed by PhD‑qualified professors with many associate professors and assistant professors holding postgraduate and doctoral degrees. Students highlight that nearly all teachers are subject specialists, use smart boards, and run well‑equipped labs and diagnostic units.
What about clinical exposure and hands-on training?
The Hebbal campus has a large teaching veterinary hospital with OPD, surgery, radiology and diagnostic labs, giving students daily exposure to small and large animal cases. Final‑year students handle cases under supervision and then do a 1‑year paid internship in clinics, farms and diagnostic centres.
Are there campus placements for veterinary graduates?
Formal campus placements are limited because veterinary recruitment is largely through state Public Service Commissions and government notifications. Graduates typically secure jobs as Veterinary Officers in Karnataka’s Animal Husbandry Department, join the Karnataka Milk Federation, or pursue MVSc and PhD for academic and research careers.
What stipend do BVSc interns get at Veterinary College Bangalore?
During the compulsory rotating internship after BVSc, students receive a government stipend. Recent batches report around ₹15,000 per month for the first six months and about ₹17,000 per month for the remaining six months, credited through the university.
How good is the library and IT infrastructure?
The central library has a large collection of veterinary textbooks, theses and journals, with computer terminals and free Wi‑Fi for students. Classrooms are fitted with projectors or smart boards, and the campus has computer labs and internet access for academic use.
What is campus life like – clubs, sports and fests?
The college has a large playground, indoor games, and a gym for both hostel and day scholars. Cultural events, sports meets and academic seminars happen in the auditorium and seminar halls, and students also participate in university‑level livestock shows and veterinary conferences.
How strict is the discipline and ragging policy?
Both college and hostels follow a strict anti‑ragging policy with written undertakings from students. CCTV surveillance, wardens and faculty advisors oversee hostels, and alcohol, smoking and ragging are explicitly banned, with disciplinary action for violations.
Can students do part-time jobs while studying BVSc in Bangalore?
Bangalore offers many part‑time opportunities, but BVSc has a packed schedule with practicals, clinics and farm visits. Most students avoid regular part‑time work during term and instead take short‑term tuitions or online freelance work that does not clash with clinical postings.
How does Veterinary College Bangalore compare to other vet colleges in Karnataka?
Veterinary College, Hebbal is one of the oldest (established 1958) and most sought‑after campuses under KVAFSU, with strong clinical load and research facilities. It usually attracts higher KCET ranks than Bidar and Shivamogga colleges, and is often preferred for its Bangalore location and hospital exposure.
What are the typical career options and starting salaries after BVSc from this college?
Graduates work as Veterinary Officers, poultry consultants, dairy farm managers, companion animal clinicians or join pharma and feed companies.
